The first recipient for 2026 is Jordyn Duffield, a graduate of South Central High School in 2022. Jordyn is now in the third year of her diploma in Therapeutic Recreational Gerontology at Lethbridge Polytechnic. She is completing her final year via distance learning, allowing her to progress at her own pace while dedicating time to her community through volunteering and spending time with family. Upon graduation, Jordyn looks forward to bringing recreational therapy services to Oyen and its surrounding areas, with hopes of working with seniors and individuals living with illness or disabilities.

In her personal life, Jordyn plans to join her fiancé on a ranch north of Sibbald, Alta., aiming to become an active and valued member of their local community.

The second recipient is Evangeline Miller, who graduated from South Central High School in June 2025. Growing up on a farm near Cereal, Evangeline developed a strong work ethic, a sense of community and a genuine care for others. She actively volunteered with the Cereal Athletic Association and the Big Country Ag Society, and worked as a lifeguard. Her most memorable and rewarding volunteer experiences include singing O Canada, painting fences, selling items, and assisting at the Cereal Children’s Rodeo and Cereal Mud Bog, among others. These experiences, she says, instilled in her a deep sense of pride in supporting her hometown and helped foster her leadership skills.

Evy has moved to New Zealand to pursue her education at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, enrolling in a five-year full-time program. Upon graduation, she will earn her Bachelor of Chiropractic and plans to return to Canada to serve rural and underserved communities that may lack access to chiropractic care. Her ultimate goal is to open her own clinic offering chiropractic services, as well as education on preventative wellness, nutrition and natural health practices.

The Oyen Lions Club accepts applications for two $1,000 scholarships each year, with a deadline of Nov. 1. For details on the criteria, contact SCHS or the Oyen Lions Club. The Lions Club is always seeking new members and volunteers. With more people power, they can raise additional funds to reinvest in the community. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to Fred Beynon at 403-664-0883 or Kim Walker at 403-664-8345.
