Melody Davidson named new commissioner of Canadian Sport School Hockey League
The Canadian Sport School Hockey League has appointed veteran hockey executive and coach Melody Davidson as its new commissioner, effective May 2026.
Davidson brings more than 30 years of experience in high-performance hockey and athlete development to the role.
She spent nearly three decades with Hockey Canada’s national women’s team program, serving as head coach, general manager and head scout between 1992 and 2020. During that span, she helped guide Canada to multiple Olympic and world championship medals, including Olympic gold in 2006 and 2010 as head coach.
The league said Davidson’s background in leadership, athlete development and high-performance sport makes her well positioned to help guide the CSSHL through its next phase of growth.
“Mel’s impact on the game of hockey in Canada and around the world is extraordinary,” interim CEO Andy Oakes said in a release.
Oakes said Davidson’s experience with Hockey Canada and Own the Podium gives her the leadership background needed to help move the league forward while benefiting member schools, student-athletes and families.
With Davidson’s appointment, Oakes will return to his previous role as chair of the CSSHL executive operations committee.
Board chair George Crookshank said Davidson’s experience at the highest levels of the sport and her commitment to athlete development made her an outstanding choice to help guide the league’s continued growth and long-term vision.
Davidson has also held leadership and advisory roles across hockey and sport, including as high-performance advisor with Own the Podium, director of culture and leadership with the WHL’s Victoria Royals, consultant and scout with the Ottawa Charge of the Professional Women’s Hockey League, and head coach of Cornell University’s NCAA Division 1 women’s hockey program.
Davidson said she is looking forward to joining the league as it continues to grow and expand development opportunities for student-athletes.
“The CSSHL has established itself as a premier development environment that successfully integrates elite hockey with education,” she said in the release.
Founded in 2009, the CSSHL now includes 39 accredited schools and 136 teams across Canada and the United States. The league says it aims to be a leader in education-based hockey in North America, with a focus on sportsmanship, citizenship, academic excellence and hockey development.
