3Cs Coyotes strike gold at U15 B provincials

3Cs Coyotes were off to Olds, Alta., for the U15 B provincials March 27-29.

The first game was Friday afternoon, and the 3Cs came out of the gate flying with seven goals in the first period on the way to a 10-1 win over Beaverlodge.

3Cs vs. Beaverlodge

The first two minutes started things off for the 3Cs with the first goal by No. 7 Sadie Rude from No. 32 Jailyn Saruga. Then at 12:25, it was No. 13 Blakely Lundy from No. 7 Sadie Rude. At 11:48, No. 32 Jailyn Saruga scored from No. 42 Kennedy Hronek and No. 36 Alaina Hagens. Goal No. 4 came at 8:26, another one from Sadie Rude, from No. 34 Ava Boxma and No. 13 Blakely Lundy. At 7:36, No. 36 Alaina Hagens scored from No. 32 Jailyn Saruga. Goal No. 6 came at 6:28 as No. 11 Aubrey Younger scored from No. 14 Kenzie Davis, and the final goal of the first period came at 2:48 when No. 8 Zaylynn Finkbiner scored from No. 42 Kennedy Hronek.

In the second period, the 3Cs started it off again at 17:41 with an unassisted goal from No. 32 Jailyn Saruga. Beaverlodge took away the shutout at 9:14 on a goal by No. 11 Hadley Dumas, but the 3Cs answered back and No. 32 Jailyn Saruga completed the hat trick at 3:32 on a power play from No. 42 Kennedy Hronek and No. 9 Rowyn Olsen.

In the third period, the 3Cs got their 10th goal at 16:03 from No. 34 Ava Boxma.

3Cs vs. Calgary Spark

Saturday morning was another successful game and a 6-0 shutout against Calgary Spark.

The 3Cs got started in the first period at 4:54 with a power play goal by No. 13 Blakely Lundy from No. 7 Sadie Rude. Then at 3:58, No. 32 Jailyn Saruga scored from No. 8 Zaylynn Finkbiner.

The 3Cs added three more goals in the second period. At 19:17, No. 11 Aubrey Younger scored from No. 16 Harper Caskey. At 13:03, No. 13 Blakely Lundy scored from No. 34 Ava Boxma and No. 9 Rowyn Olsen. At 12:43, No. 36 Alaina Hagens added another.

In the third period, the 3Cs got one more at 10:31 as No. 34 Ava Boxma scored from No. 11 Aubrey Younger.

3Cs vs. Fort Saskatchewan

Saturday afternoon against Fort Saskatchewan, the 3Cs came out flat and were down 4-1 after two periods. They rallied in the third with four unanswered goals to win 5-4 and come out of their pool in first place.

Fort Saskatchewan got the first three goals of the first period. At 12:02, No. 10 Laura Derksen scored from No. 17 Myelle Fendelet. At 7:55, No. 11 Auriana Tomm scored from No. 18 Amber McLellan. At 5:18, Fort Saskatchewan’s third goal came from No. 18 Amber McLellan from No. 19 Rowyn Ford. Then, with just over a minute left, the 3Cs got on the board at 1:17 as No. 32 Jailyn Saruga scored from No. 36 Alaina Hagens.

Fort Saskatchewan opened the second period again at 10:16 with a goal by No. 10 Laura Derksen from No. 16 Averie Brake and No. 20 Mia Miller.

The 3Cs came alive in the third and closed the gap in a span of five minutes. At 14:47, No. 36 Alaina Hagens scored from No. 32 Jailyn Saruga and No. 42 Kennedy Hronek. At 12:23, No. 32 Jailyn Saruga scored from No. 9 Rowyn Olsen and No. 36 Alaina Hagens. At 10:10, No. 36 Alaina Hagens scored again from No. 32 Jailyn Saruga. Then at 9:29, Alaina Hagens completed the hat trick. What a game. Both the 3Cs and Fort Saskatchewan moved on to the semifinals.

Semifinal: 3Cs vs. Lakeland

Sunday morning’s semifinal was another exciting one. The 3Cs pulled out a tight 3-2 win on a penalty-shot goal in overtime by Jailyn Saruga.

The 3Cs got on the board first at 8:50 of the first period as No. 7 Sadie Rude scored from No. 34 Ava Boxma.

In the second period, No. 32 Jailyn Saruga added another at 11:08 from No. 36 Alaina Hagens. Lakeland answered at 6:50 on a power play when No. 11 Lauren Wurzer scored from No. 18 Addison March and No. 4 Hadley Kowalchuk.

In the third period, Lakeland tied it at 5:19 as No. 14 Brooklyn Brunet scored from No. 4 Hadley Kowalchuk. Overtime followed, and at 7:44, Jailyn Saruga won it for the 3Cs with a penalty-shot goal.

That sent the 3Cs to the gold medal game against Fort Saskatchewan Fury.

Gold Medal Game

In the championship final against Fort Saskatchewan Fury, the girls dominated from start to finish, winning 8-2 to capture gold.

The 3Cs opened the scoring at 18:26 of the first period on a goal by No. 16 Harper Caskey. With 55 seconds left in the period, the 3Cs added another as No. 34 Ava Boxma scored from No. 2 Georgia Thornton.

No. 11 Aubrey Younger opened the second period with a goal from No. 14 Kenzie Davis at 18:25. Then at 15:26, No. 7 Sadie Rude scored. At 11:30, Fort Saskatchewan got one back as No. 20 Mia Miller found a hole to make it 4-1. At 9:06, the 3Cs answered with a goal by No. 34 Ava Boxma from No. 13 Blakely Lundy and No. 7 Sadie Rude. At 3:53, Ava Boxma scored again from No. 13 Blakely Lundy to complete the hat trick. Seconds later, Ava scored again, finishing with four goals in the game.

In the third period, the 3Cs struck again at 15:30 on an unassisted goal by No. 42 Kennedy Hronek. Fort Saskatchewan scored the final goal of the game at 12:51 when No. 12 Joelle LeBlanc scored from No. 15 Kylie Clark and No. 10 Laura Derksen.

The 3Cs captured the gold medal and also finished with the best goal differential and the top three point-getters in the entire tournament. What a year for this 3Cs team.
