Winter Gymkhana Series wraps up at Crossroads Centre

The Big Country Agricultural Society wrapped up its Winter Gymkhana Series finals March 1 at the BCAS Crossroads Centre, capping a season that drew 56 members to compete over four Sundays throughout the winter.

Riders ranged in age from three years old to grandmothers and competed in events including pole bending, thread the needle and barrel racing, each aiming for the fastest time in their age category. Points accumulated throughout the series determined year-end prizes for the top five competitors in each group.

The Tiny Mite division for riders aged five and under proved to be a crowd favourite. Young competitors entertained spectators with their enthusiasm and showed noticeable improvement over the course of the series. Each Tiny Mite received a wild rag bib donated by Ranch Baby Bibs, owned by Melissa Grover of Leader. Linda Bingeman, Cheryl Ball and Diana Walker also treated the Tiny Mites to ice cream.

Krista and Aaron Fletcher and family contributed goodie bags of horse treats for all 56 members, while Tyrone Maines completed leatherwork for the event toques on short notice.

First-place winners in each of the six age categories received custom buckles created by JBL Leather & Silver Design. Buckle sponsors included Cheryl and Dave with The Rack; Sandra Sinclair; Jayme and Rocky Miller with Miller Time Ranching; Tyrel and Leslee Wilson with Lazy TL Angus; Cresten and Michelle Andersen with CMA Ranching; and April and Tim Heeg with TAAG Farms.

Announcer Tammie Bouvier kept the show running smoothly throughout the series. When she was unavailable, Leah Walker and Haley Powell stepped in to keep competitors and spectators informed.

Behind the scenes, Richard Houston and Cresten Andersen operated the arena groomer, keeping the ground in prime condition for each event.

Despite cold temperatures and occasional cancellations, members continued to turn out throughout the winter. Organizers said the season’s success was due to enthusiastic participants, dedicated volunteers, supportive spectators and generous prize sponsors.

The Big Country Agricultural Society plans to host the Winter Gymkhana Series again next year.
