Sibbald News: Quilters at work, community milestones and a welcome return to winter
By Lee Switzer
The Sibbald Quilting Club ladies were back in action the first weekend in February. If you’ve never seen these affairs, it is something. Tables are full. There are sewing machines, ironing boards, cutters, mats and fabric everywhere! The Sibbald Quilting Club and the Sibbald Community Club will be hosting a Quilting Show on Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27, 2026. The last show was simply amazing, and I am sure this next show will be as well.
Wow, what a change. On Sunday, I was pushing my grandson on the swing and we played outside all afternoon. Today it is -24 C with a crisp breeze. We all knew that the fake spring we’ve enjoyed for the past several weeks wasn’t going to stay. I hope the trees and cattle don’t take this swing in temperatures too badly.
The Family Day long weekend was a busy time for some and a relaxing catch-up for others. Brandt, Brianna and Macy Lyster were showing cattle at Beef Congress in Oyen, winning a few classes along the way. There were young people from all over Alberta and Saskatchewan at the show.
Brandt Lyster is participating in a youth project sponsored by OH Ranch in the Longview area. Out of 60 applicants, 12 youth were chosen. Brandt received a steer from the ranch, plus some feed and cash to help with raising the animal. Brandt has to take the steer to three different shows and, through record books and a point system, an aggregate winner is chosen. There are many items and cash prizes with this project, as well as keeping a significant amount of the proceeds when the steer is sold. Well done, Brandt, on being selected for this great experience.
We all know that to feel joy we have to experience sorrow. David and Cyndy Eaton and their families attended the recent wedding of their niece, Christine, in Manitoba on Valentine’s Day. A few days later, they attended a service for their sister-in-law, Kristi Kilpatrick. Jeff’s wife passed away suddenly at a young age. Our heartfelt condolences are sent to all of the Eaton family.
Sympathy is also extended to Kevin, Ruth and the Munroe families on the recent passing of Kevin’s brother, Cameron. Sending comfort and peace to you all.
On Friday, February 27, the community club is having a games night. Bring your game of choice — cards, board games — and a snack. The bar will open at 7 p.m.
Take care, everybody.
