Sibbald News: First Disking Bonspiel in 40+ years a success in Sibbald
By Lee Switzer
Spring weather is here. Snow flurries and bright blue skies. Don’t put your winter gear away just yet. It’s a mixed bag.
Once more, I’m a bit late with the news. We were away for a few days this week for an early Easter gathering in Black Diamond, and I couldn’t get things in any earlier.
March 28 was an amazing night at the hall. More than 70 people enjoyed an excellent homemade lasagna supper, followed by a disking tournament. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, disking winter leagues could be found in nearly every small hall across the prairies.
Sixteen teams played slightly shorter games. There was tons of laughter and a few bad words. Teams included players ranging in age from 16 to 85, and everything in between.
Special thanks to our neighbours from Esther, Alsask, Loverna, Hoosier, Marengo and other places for joining in the fun. One guest from a larger centre commented, “This is what community looks like,” and it truly did.
Scott Woods won the 50/50 draw. Ken and Joanne Miller, along with Rick and Shannon Mundt, won the A Event, while Rob and Chandra Mundt, Dianne Berscht and Rob Kinch took the B Event.
Thanks go to the entertainment, food and bar committees, and everyone else, for hosting this awesome evening.
Disking is a great game—warm, inexpensive, and requiring no equipment. Players of all ages, from eight to over 80, can take part. Fun was had by all.
Keep an eye out for plans to launch a winter league in 2027, with the possibility of another bonspiel or two.
Dance competitions are in full swing. Macy Lyster, as well as Jade and Emmie Smith, compete with Breaking Ground Studio with Miss Tonya. Esther and Celia Chiliak dance with Miss Stephanie at Wilson School of Dance.
Congratulations to Brianna Lyster, who plays female hockey with the Coyote team as part of the 3C, Castor, Coronation and Consort league, on winning the U15 B female provincial title in Olds this past weekend. Excellent work, ladies!
Brandt Lyster was also busy in Stettler this past weekend, attending a clinic and cattle show.
A quick reminder that Quad tickets are selling very well. Tickets are available from Deb Mundt at AFSC or at Home Hardware in Oyen. The next big event at the hall will be the Quilt Show on Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27.
Happy Easter, everyone.
