RCMP provide tips to prevent business break and enters

The Alberta RCMP is reminding business owners of crime prevention practices that can help reduce risk of theft and damages.

In 2025, there were 3,858 business break and enters across Alberta RCMP jurisdiction. This number is down from 4,574 business break and enters in 2024. 

The Alberta RCMP recommends the following for business owners:

Install an alarm system and ensure it’s armed at the end of each day.

Invest in good quality cameras that provide full coverage of the space, or points of entry at a minimum.

Ensure there’s appropriate interior lighting that can be left on to provide optimum visibility and install exterior motion lighting to deter thieves from the outside.

Keep track of all keys and fobs that access your commercial property.

Keep windows clear of posters or stickers and consider installing shutters or bars for added protection.

Ensure valuables are secured and away from windows after hours.

Consider investing in fences for extra protection and ensure they are well maintained.

Budgeting for security measures such as sturdy locks, quality cameras and an alarm system can pay off in the long run. These investments can make a difference in preventing theft and identifying criminals.
