Oyen seniors plan spring activities, discuss hall upgrades

By Beth Symes

Nine members of the Oyen and District Seniors group met April 1 for their monthly potluck and meeting.

Shirley Foot, in Lynda’s absence, called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Minutes were presented by Beth, and the financial report was delivered by Shirley on behalf of Sherry. An update was also provided on grant applications for kitchen renovations at the hall. Two grants have been approved, with a decision on a third expected by mid-April.

Members reviewed recent and upcoming social activities. The March 20 Fun Night drew 13 participants for cards and visiting. The next Fun Night is scheduled for April 17 at 7 p.m.

There has been interest from the Cereal and Empress seniors groups in holding a joint activity day in Oyen. A tentative date of May 1, from 10 a.m. to approximately 2:30 or 3 p.m., will be proposed. Activities may include floor curling, shuffleboard, pool and cards, along with a soup and sandwich lunch. Final plans will be confirmed once availability from the other groups is determined.

An RCMP presentation on scams and fraud targeting seniors will take place April 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Recreation Centre. The session is open to all seniors interested in learning more about current fraud risks.

With spring approaching, members approved funds to purchase plants from the greenhouse in May. A gardening group will be formed to plant them in the outdoor planters at the hall.

Due to rising costs, a motion was passed to increase hall rental rates. Jessie Battrum remains the contact for bookings.

The next potluck and meeting will be held May 6. Newcomers are always welcome.
