Global sweep of apps used by children

Alberta’s privacy office is joining more than 30 international authorities this week to review websites and apps commonly used by children.

The 2025 Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN) sweep, running Nov. 3 to 7, looks at whether online services collect children’s data responsibly, are transparent about privacy practices, and use age-verification and protective measures.

“Protecting children’s privacy has been a focus of our office for years,” said Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner Diane McLeod. “The sweep helps us highlight issues and raise awareness among Albertans.”

Results will be published in the coming months. GPEN promotes international cooperation in privacy enforcement and awareness.

The OIPC Alberta oversees the province’s access to information and privacy laws and operates independently of government.
