The NFPA 1001 Level 2 course, led by the East Central Emergency Training Partnership, was held in Oyen from March 6 to 8 as the second instalment of three weekends required to achieve certification.

The weekend schedule, running Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday, began Oct. 17 to 19, 2025, in Hanna, continued in March in Oyen, and will conclude April 10 to 12 back in Hanna. The final Sunday in April will be testing day, with a practical exam followed by a written exam.

The course is delivered through three weekends of face-to-face meetings and online instructional activities, requiring students to complete an average of eight to 10 hours of work prior to each face-to-face weekend. In addition to the classroom days, one extra face-to-face day is scheduled for certification testing, which will include practical testing and a written exam.

Oyen’s course weekend focused on vehicle extrication and technical rescue, community risk reduction, and incident management systems. Twenty-nine students enrolled in the course from six different fire departments in the SAB region and the MD of Acadia, including Oyen, Youngstown, Acadia Valley, Consort, Cessford and Hanna.

From Oyen, eight students participated: Morgan Senkiw, Jacob Breum, Paulo Salvanera, Conner MacLean, Struan Heath, Cody Knox, Mark Johnson and Luke Ruschkowski. Many hours were spent completing multiple scenarios to test their new skills.
