Alberta RCMP urge drivers to slow down as spring conditions improve

The Alberta RCMP is reminding motorists to obey speed limits as warmer weather brings improved road conditions and increased travel across the province.

Police say speeding continues to be a leading factor in serious and fatal collisions, even when driving conditions appear ideal. According to Alberta Transportation, roughly one in four fatal crashes involve unsafe speed, with most occurring in rural areas.

In 2025, Alberta RCMP issued 47,989 speeding tickets, including 4,949 violations in April alone.

Officers are encouraging drivers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time rather than relying on higher speeds to reach their destination. Motorists are also reminded to slow down in school, playground and construction zones, where pedestrian traffic is often higher.

RCMP note that speeding is not limited to exceeding posted limits, but also includes driving too fast for road, weather or traffic conditions. Maintaining a safe speed allows drivers more time to react to unexpected hazards.

Passengers are also encouraged to speak up if they feel a driver is travelling at an unsafe speed.

“Speeding is incredibly normalized, but it’s important to prioritize your safety over saving a few minutes,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Speeding remains one of the biggest threats to traffic safety and can have devastating consequences.”
