Viva Vitality: New Year, New Goals!
By Megan Burland
Over the last few years, my husband and I have started a new tradition. We have a “year in review” meeting between Christmas and New Years Day where we go out for dinner and discuss what we’ve accomplished in the past year. It’s also a chance for us to reflect on our goals for the upcoming year.
It’s probably no surprise that this reflective time of year can lead some to consider quitting smoking or vaping. If this resonates with you, AlbertaQuits has tools to support you at albertaquits.ca. These tools include tips for “quit day” and a fillable quit plan template. Creating a quit plan can build your confidence by allowing you to outline triggers, strategies that might help and provide space for you to reflect on your reasons for quitting.
If improved health is one of your motivations, spend time learning about the health benefits of quitting. On the AlbertaQuits website, you can view a resource outlining many of the health benefits to quitting smoking. See how quitting pays off, from the first eight hours to 20 years down the road!
And don’t forget to reach out for support. Speak with your health care team to let them know that you are working on making this change. They can provide individualized support and guidance.
AlbertaQuits also has a variety of other free support options including:
Group Support: QuitCore is a 6-week group support program that is guided by trained facilitators. It is currently offered by telephone, virtually and in-person. To register for an upcoming QuitCore group, call the AlbertaQuits Helpline at 1-866-710-7848.
Telephone Support: Confidential and individualized support by telephone. Call the AlbertaQuits helpline, toll-free at 1-866-710-7848.
Text Support: Text the word ABQUITS to number 123456 to register to begin receiving supportive messages via text.
It’s the time of year for reflection. Be kind to yourself, no matter what goals you are thinking of tackling. Celebrate the small successes and take it one day at a time.
