Viva Vitality: Connecting with our communities
By Laura Lukye
Today’s world is so digitally connected, and yet many people feel less connected to their communities than in the past. Connection to community is about support and belonging, and it’s arguably more important now than ever before. Community connection provides us with a sense of identity and knowing that we are part of something larger than our individual selves.
Try to get out of your comfort zone to venture out and see what your community has to offer. This can mean choosing to attend local events instead of staying home, introducing yourself to a neighbour, volunteering your time to a good cause, or simply engaging in conversation without distraction.
When we participate in our communities, we build trust. We strengthen relationships. We create networks of support that matter when life becomes difficult. Communities thrive when people are engaged and actively involved. Even small actions — a shared smile, a helping hand, a brief conversation — can help build connection and have a meaningful impact.
See what activities and opportunities for connection are available in your community. Some ideas on how to start might include:
visiting your local library
go to a recreation center
explore opportunities through a volunteer centre
see what your community’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) department has to offer
Our connection to our communities is not lost. It is waiting to be strengthened. In a world that often pulls us inward toward screens and individual pursuits, choosing to reach outward may be one of the most important decisions we can make.
Make connection to community a priority for you.
