Seniors centre discusses events and hall repairs at March meeting

By Beth Symes

Twelve members gathered for the March potluck on March 4 at the Oyen and District Seniors Recreation Centre and enjoyed a meal with a variety of main course dishes and desserts. Two more members joined at 7 p.m. for the meeting.

After the minutes and financial reports were presented, members discussed several items of old and new business.

Lynda reported in Sherry’s absence that there had been no update on the second grant application. An update is expected later in March. Sherry has also been brainstorming ideas for events and activities that could be hosted in the hall as fundraisers. Her ideas include a Mother’s Day tea, a trivia night and an event focused on mother-and-daughter fashions.

Lynda had previously spoken with FCSS about the possibility of using the hall’s media equipment to host a family movie night. Shirley Foot noted that in another community seniors hosted an event where they taught children to dance. Members were encouraged to stay tuned to see if any of these ideas move forward.

A recent event in the hall was the monthly Fun Night held Feb. 20. Thirteen people attended and enjoyed cribbage and table games. The next Fun Night is scheduled for March 20.

Members again discussed the possibility of hosting an activity event with seniors from other communities. No final decision was made because the groups being considered were holding meetings to discuss the idea after this meeting. Further contact will be made before the April meeting.

Members were relieved to learn that brown spots in one area of the ceiling were not the result of a roof leak. Dave and Lyle determined an open vent had allowed moisture to reach the inside ceiling. With the vent now closed, the issue should be resolved.

Another maintenance issue was also quickly fixed. One furnace was not heating the back area of the hall during the third week in February, but Dave resolved the problem by replacing a thermocoupler.

Crafting and floor curling continue at the hall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Lorraine reported there has been less interest in pickleball on Thursdays, but she and Lyle continue to attend Thursday evenings so there will be someone available to play if others come out.

Jessie reminded members that if the kitchen is not included in a rental agreement when part of the hall is rented, the kitchen will be locked.

The next potluck and meeting will take place April 1. Seniors aged 50 and over are welcome to attend the potluck for food and socializing and stay for the short meeting to learn more about the group.
