RCMP adds 21 new officers across Alberta detachments

The Alberta RCMP says 21 newly graduated police officers will soon be deployed to communities across the province as the force works to improve staffing levels and frontline visibility.

The officers recently completed the RCMP’s Cadet Training Program at Depot in Regina and will be posted to detachments in Barrhead, Cardston, Chateh, Coronation, Drayton Valley, Fort Vermilion, High Prairie, Hinton, Lloydminster, McLennan, Piikani Nation, Provost, Redcliff, Red Earth Creek, Stettler, St. Paul, Valleyview, Vegreville, Wainwright and Wood Buffalo.

In a release, Alberta RCMP Commanding Officer Deputy Commissioner Trevor Daroux said police visibility and staffing remain key concerns in the communities the force serves.

“These new police officers are an example of our focus to look inward at our hiring processes to remove barriers, find efficiencies, and ensure the most qualified applicants are chosen to serve your communities,” Daroux said.

The Alberta RCMP said the new recruits are part of what it described as a positive shift in recruitment and retention.

Since April 1, 2024, the force says it has received more than 5,700 applications in Alberta. It also said its Experienced Police Officer Program has hired 25 officers since April 2025, with 33 more applications currently being processed.

The force said other measures are also being used to address vacancies and temporary absences.

They include a Relief Team based in Cochrane and Leduc that provides frontline support to communities facing staffing shortages, injuries or major events. The Alberta RCMP said 65 deployments have already been planned this year across 16 detachments.

It also said alternate service delivery models are being used in remote and isolated locations, including a fly-in model in Fox Lake.

The Alberta RCMP added that 34 active reservists are currently supporting frontline policing across the province, with 11 more in the application process.

The force says it offers more than 150 career paths tied to its municipal, provincial and federal policing mandates.
