Putting energy revenues back in your pocket

Alberta's government is launching a new $100 rebate for nearly 3.4 million residents starting July 1, tied to elevated oil revenues collected over recent months.

The Alberta Energy Rebate offers $100 per eligible adult. Two-adult households receive $200. Additional adults aged 18 and older living at the same address each qualify for their own $100 payment, applied for separately.

To qualify, applicants must be 18 or older, Alberta residents, have filed a 2025 tax return and have household income of $225,000 or less. The application portal opens July 1 and closes Sept. 30, 2026.

Seniors receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit and individuals enrolled in AISH, the Alberta Disability Assistance Program and Income Support are automatically enrolled and do not need to apply.

Premier Danielle Smith said higher oil prices affect more than fuel costs, driving up groceries, utilities and other household expenses. The rebate, she said, gives families flexibility to use the money where they need it most.

The province says the rebate delivers more than 50 per cent in additional savings, on average, compared to what the previous fuel tax relief program was projected to provide over three months. The average Albertan uses roughly 2,000 litres of fuel annually, meaning the fuel tax program returned only about $65 per person per quarter.

West Texas Intermediate averaged $92.74 per barrel over the 20-day review period from May 18 through June 15, 2026.

Alberta currently has the second-lowest fuel tax in Canada at 13 cents per litre. The average pump price in the province as of June 15 was 156.3 cents per litre, compared to a Canadian average of 171.2 cents per litre.

The rebate is not taxable and does not need to be reported to the Canada Revenue Agency. Receiving it will not affect eligibility or benefit amounts under AISH, ADAP, Income Support, Alberta Seniors Benefit or federal seniors' programs.
