Oyen seniors wrap up activities before summer break
By Beth Symes
Our final potluck supper and meeting prior to September was held on June 3. Ten members enjoyed the delicious potluck meal and two more members joined us for the meeting at 7 p.m.
Lynda called the meeting to order, the minutes from the May meeting were presented by Beth, and the financial statements were presented by Sherry.
Sherry once again gave an update on grants received and new grant applications she had submitted. Sherry, Lynda and Beth had attended an event in Youngstown on May 20, at which time a number of grants were presented to a variety of organizations in the area.
Oyen and District Seniors received a grant from Pattern Canada, which is the second grant received to be used for expenses for the renovation of the kitchen. In addition to that grant, Pattern Canada made a donation for the same project. A further grant designated for the kitchen renovation was received earlier from CFSEA. Our association is very appreciative to these organizations for the grants and donation, which are allowing us to renovate the kitchen in our hall.
A second area in the hall requiring attention is the hardwood floor. Sherry was able to contact a contractor in Medicine Hat who provided a quote for the sanding and refinishing the floor requires. A decision was made at the meeting to go ahead with this work so the floor does not deteriorate further.
Lynda has taken charge of the external beautification work by purchasing the plants and getting them planted in the outdoor planters. She also reported that only one of the grasses that had been planted last year in the rocked area south of the hall had not survived the winter. All the rest appear healthy.
Lynda will also investigate a second practical issue for the hall, that of securing garbage bins so the garbage can be picked up as residential garbage is in Oyen.
Our last regular activity prior to the summer break was the Fun Night held on May 29. Ten people attended and greatly enjoyed the slushies made in the machine Graham and Angela brought for the evening, as well as the card and dice games.
All our regular activities will resume in the fall. Our first potluck and meeting will be on Sept. 9. Floor curling will begin on Oct. 14, and crafting will also begin in October. Fun Nights will resume in the fall, with the first date to be announced in September.
We welcome new seniors, 50 and older, to consider becoming members of the association and taking part in some of these activities.
We wish a wonderful summer of relaxation and fun to everyone.
