Oyen seniors vote to proceed with kitchen renovation
By Beth Symes
The Oyen and District Seniors Group has had two meetings since the events noted in our April report.
Our regular pot luck and monthly meeting was held on May 6, when seven members gathered for the pot luck. Once again we enjoyed a varied, delicious meal prior to our meeting. Two more members joined the group for the meeting. The other meeting, a specially called meeting, was held on April 22. It was attended by thirteen members. It was called specifically to discuss the renovation of the kitchen, as the grants to proceed with that were in place. Sherry provided information about the renovation plans which the contractor had laid out at the time of an earlier appraisal and reminded us of specific grant information. On the basis of this information and our current financial situation, it was decided to proceed with these renovations.
Our regular meeting on May 6 was called to order by Lynda after our pot luck. The first business items were the minutes from our April meeting presented by Beth and the financial statement presented by Sherry. Sherry also updated the group about her meeting with the contractor who will be doing the renovation of the kitchen, which took place after our meeting on April 22. He indicated that he would be able to begin the renovations in October. Sherry reported that she has also made applications for four more grants, which will be made for bathroom renovations and for new appliances for the kitchen. Still in relation to grants, three members of the executive will be attending a grant presentation meeting in Youngstown later in May.
April was the final month for many of the regular activities taking place at the Oyen and District Seniors Recreation Centre. The last Crafting Day for the season was held on April 28. Cheryl organized a special wind up lunch at The 90's Restaurant, which twelve ladies enjoyed before returning to the hall for the afternoon. The final Floor Curling took place on April 29. Floor Curling will resume in October. The April Fun Night was held on April 17 and was enjoyed by those attending. The next Fun Night will be held on May 29. A decision will be made at the June meeting about whether to proceed with a June Fun Night. One further event which was held at the hall during the month of April happened on the blustery, blizzardy evening of April 15, which was the information evening about scams and frauds that are occurring with more frequency. Representatives from the RCMP, the TD Bank and ATB Financial presented much useful information about how to avoid being caught up in a fraudulent act or scam.
During the month of May, when the weather warms up, we will once again be purchasing plants to decorate our outdoor space. A gardening group will gather to do the planting.
Our planning for an Activity Day came too late in the season. By the time we set a May date, the interest which had been expressed by other groups faded, so we decided to revisit this possible plan in the fall. Also, once again Sherry presented some fundraising ideas which would involve various activities which we could be involved in hosting next season. After brainstorming with other contacts, she presented a series of suggestions, some of which were an Amazing Race Activity, a Scavenger Hunt, Movie Night, a Mother's and Father's Day Event, Grandparents Day, a Crafting and Quilting Day, Fashion Show, Costume Party, and a Learned Skills Day. Thus I invite you to stay posted for possible events in the next fall and winter season. Our last pot luck and meeting before fall will take place on June 3 at the Seniors Recreation Centre at 6:00 p.m.
