Keeping post-secondary education affordable
Applications for student loans and grants for the 2026-27 academic year open June 3, as Alberta's government commits more than $1 billion in student aid funding.
The province is increasing non-repayable support, including nearly $107 million in scholarships and awards and more than $75 million in grants. Eligibility assessments are also being updated to better reflect individual financial need, with parental or spousal contributions factored in for certain applicants.
"We know students and families are under real financial pressure, and student aid can make the difference for staying in school," said Myles McDougall, Minister of Advanced Education. "By increasing non-repayable support and updating how we assess financial need, we are ensuring help is fair, transparent and focused on students who need it most."
Students who apply for loans are automatically assessed for non-repayable grants. A single online application covers both provincial and federal loans and grants. Applicants are encouraged to apply at least 60 days before their study period begins.
Applications are available through Alberta Student Aid at studentaid.alberta.ca.
