Investing $7M to boost sport and recreation infrastructure

Alberta’s government is investing $7 million to support sport and recreation infrastructure projects across the province, officials announced Wednesday.

The funding, part of the Active Communities Initiative, aims to improve facilities that promote active living and well-being, including arenas, courts, curling rinks, and multi-use community spaces. The program is expected to serve up to a million Albertans while stimulating more than $60 million in economic activity and creating both short- and long-term jobs.

“I am proud to support projects that help Albertans live healthier and more active lives,” said Andrew Boitchenko, minister of tourism and sport. “In many places, recreation centres serve as hubs for the community. With the Active Communities Initiative funding, more Albertans can enjoy sports and connect with others close to home.”

Recipients include Valley Ski Hill, which will use the funding for upgrades to its ski lodge and snowmaking equipment. “It will ensure the safe and efficient operation of our facility for generations to come, enabling us to provide an affordable winter sport and recreation opportunity for families and youth in our rural communities,” said Carol Macrae, secretary of the Valley Ski Club Castor Association.

Other projects supported in 2025 include arena renovations in Lomond, pickleball courts in Okotoks, curling rinks in Rockyford, and a new indoor running track for the Lubicon Lake Band #453. Chief Billy Joe Laboucan said the track will provide a safe, year-round space for youth sports, exercise for elders and young parents, and support for community wellness activities.

The Active Communities Initiative is open to eligible community groups, non-profits, and societies, including First Nations and Metis Settlements. Applications for the 2026 program will open in spring 2026.
