Alberta RCMP shares tips to prevent vehicle theft
EDMONTON – The Alberta RCMP is reminding drivers this May to take basic precautions to prevent the theft of vehicles and their contents.
In 2025, there were 7,214 motor vehicles stolen in Alberta RCMP jurisdiction, along with 5,134 thefts from vehicles. Half-ton trucks were the most commonly stolen type.
Police are encouraging drivers to follow these habits to reduce their risk:
Never leave a vehicle unattended with the keys inside.
Always lock the vehicle, even when stepping away briefly.
Do not leave keys, garage door openers, or documents containing personal identifying information inside the vehicle. Thieves can use these items to access homes.
Close all windows when leaving the vehicle, even in hot weather.
Park in a locked garage when possible. Otherwise, choose a well-lit area within sight, and consider leaving outdoor lights on.
Remove personal belongings, loose change, and valuables from the vehicle to avoid attracting opportunistic thieves.
