Alberta invests $500,000 in fire training grants for local departments
Alberta’s government is providing $500,000 in funding to support fire services training across the province, with 90 municipalities, First Nations and Métis Settlements set to receive grants.
The funding, delivered through the Fire Services Training Program, is aimed at helping local fire departments access industry-standard training and improve emergency response capabilities.
Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams said the investment will ensure firefighters have the skills needed to respond safely and effectively when emergencies occur.
Training supported through the program includes ice water rescues, hazardous materials response and other specialized courses designed to meet the needs of individual communities.
Alberta Fire Chiefs Association president Drayton Bussiere said the funding will strengthen fire services across Alberta and improve overall preparedness.
The provincial government said the program also helps standardize firefighter certification and testing, ensuring credentials align with National Fire Protection Association professional qualification standards.
All municipalities, First Nations and Métis Settlements in Alberta are eligible to apply for the grant, with local authorities responsible for determining their own fire service needs, including staffing, budgets and training priorities.
The province said the funding is part of its broader support for fire services, which also includes maintaining the provincial fire code and administering emergency responder service medals.
