Alberta cracks down on unsafe trucking practices
Alberta is taking stronger action to improve trucking safety, targeting unsafe driver training schools and carriers. The government has closed five training schools, revoked 12 instructor licences, issued 39 disciplinary letters, and imposed over $100,000 in fines.
Thirteen commercial trucking companies, including seven “chameleon” carriers that evade oversight, have been removed from the roads.“Anyone cutting corners or operating unsafe trucks will be removed from our roads,” said Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen, emphasizing the province’s commitment to protecting families. The province is also addressing driver misclassification schemes and strengthening training standards through the new Class 1 Learning Pathway, which exceeds national training requirements. Alberta has invested $54.1 million over three years to support driver recruitment, training, and retention.Efforts include audits, inspections, and stricter oversight to ensure only qualified drivers, carriers, and schools operate in the province.
