Alberta commits $22M to school safety upgrades and staff training

Alberta’s government is investing $22 million to improve school safety through infrastructure upgrades and enhanced staff training following a recent tragedy.

The funding includes a one-time $20 million grant for security improvements in schools and $2 million to support safety-related training for school staff across the province. The investment comes in response to an incident in Tumbler Ridge and is aimed at strengthening both physical security and emergency preparedness in schools.

Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said the funding will help ensure schools remain safe environments for students and staff.

The $2 million allocated for training will support school authorities in improving their readiness for a range of incidents. Of that amount, $1.75 million will be distributed to public school boards based on enrolment, while $250,000 will go to the Association of Independent Schools and Colleges in Alberta to deliver training for independent school leaders.

School divisions will have flexibility in how the funding is used, including expanding existing programs or supporting recertification. Eligible training areas include trauma-informed practices, emergency preparedness and critical incident response.

The larger $20 million portion will fund security upgrades such as improved locks, doors, surveillance cameras and window coverings. Funding will also be distributed based on student enrolment.

Shali Baziuk, president of the Alberta School Boards Association, said school boards welcome the investment and the flexibility to address local safety needs.

The province also plans to introduce consistent school safety standards in the coming months, which will apply to public, separate, francophone, charter and accredited independent schools.

School authorities will be required to report on how the funding is used, with an interim report due in November 2026 and a final report expected in November 2027.
